Mark 12: 35-37 Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David?  For David himself said by the Holy Spirit: The LORD said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool. Therefore David himself calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?" And the common people heard Him gladly.

Jesus had been tested by his enemies. They asked him hard questions and he answered them all with ease, keen insight, and divine wisdom. After that, "No one dared question him" [verse 34].  He then turns the tables on them and asks them a question. They knew that the Messiah would come from the House of David but David himself calls this descendant of his "Lord". How can that be? They have no answer. Of course the answer is that the Messiah would be both son of David AND son of God. They could not or perhaps would not answer him. They did not have the humility to ask him what he meant, to truly learn from him.  When we learn the truth of the Lord's descendancy from Abraham and David [See Matthew 1:1; Luke 1:31-35; Galatians 3:27-29] and the nature of his divine sonship, we are well on the way to understanding the grand purpose of God with His creation and the part we may be privileged to play in it.
