The saying, "God helps those who help themselves," is not found in the Bible but was written by Benjamin Franklin (1736).  Franklin did not believe that God participates actively in human affairs. He was saying that if a person cannot help himself, his situation is hopeless.

The Bible teaches quite the opposite. God can and does intervene for good on behalf of those who love him. Indeed, He has intervened, in the provision of His son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to save us from sin and give us the hope of eternal life in His kingdom.

Romans 5:6, 8 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly....But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Jeremiah 17:5 Thus says the LORD, "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind And makes flesh his strength, And whose heart turns away from the LORD.
