John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

Men and women were created with freewill - the ability to choose whether to serve God or serve himself. Adam chose to disobey God and brought servitude to sin and death on his posterity. Everyone chooses to serve themselves. In serving themselves they break God’s commandments. This is called sin. The penalty for sin is death.

Ezekiel 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death;

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

We all are naturally in bondage (slavery) to sin and death. We cannot free ourselves.

In order to remedy the situation God conceived a son, Jesus, through Mary. This was the son promised to Abraham and David whose father would be God.

Genesis 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

1 Chronicles 22:10 He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.

Jesus is the promised anointed one (messiah - Christ) who would save his people from their sins.

Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Jesus Christ did no sin and gave his life as a sacrifice that we might have forgiveness for our sins.

Galatians 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

To obtain this forgiveness we have to believe the gospel preached by Jesus, repent of our self-centred way of life, be baptised for the remission of our sins and live a new life by his commandments.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;

Acts 2:38 Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins...

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

By choosing to obey the gospel of Jesus Christ, we are freed from slavery to sin and death. In Christ we become sons of God and have the certain hope of resurrection from the dead to eternal life in the kingdom of God when Christ returns.

John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Freedom that matters in Biblical terms can be defined as passing from death, as sons of Adam, into life, as sons of God, through Jesus Christ.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren...

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
