We have life because God has a purpose with the earth which he created.

Isaiah 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

Numbers 24:21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.

God will fill this earth with his glory in the form of men and women raised to the divine nature and made equal unto the angels in whom he can dwell forever.

Luke 20:35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: 36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

Revelation 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

To this end God created man in his own image.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

He gave them instruction to multiply and to have dominion over the earth.

Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

God made man with freewill rather than as a robot. Man is free to choose whether he will obey his creator or not. God gave Adam one law to keep; the breaking of which would result in sin and death.

Genesis 1:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Adam and Eve disobeyed God and brought sin and death upon their offspring.

Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

We are alive today because we are the offspring of Adam and Eve. One day we will die because of our sin.

Ezekiel 18:4... the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death...

God has provided a way for us to be saved from death by fathering a son born of Mary with our nature who lived a life without sin. By his obedience and the willing sacrifice of his life for us he is able to redeem us from the death sentence brought upon us by Adam.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned... 18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

When we die we have no conscious existence. Contrary to popular belief the Bible teaches that when we die we really are dead. We are mortal; we do not have an immortal soul or spirit that continues on with life after we are dead.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Psalms 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

For this reason the dead are said to sleep.

Job 7:21 And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

The only way we can be saved from death is by resurrection from the dead. Resurrection from the dead and eternal life is only attainable by belief in, and obedience to, the gospel preached in the New Testament by Jesus Christ and his apostles.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned (condemned to eternal death).

Jesus Christ at his return will raise from the dead those that believe and obey him and give them everlasting life in the kingdom of God.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

Paul sums it up and explains what is going to happen in 1 Corinthians 15.

1 Corinthians 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming. 24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. 27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him. 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

In this way the declared intention of God to fill the earth with his glory will be fulfilled.

If we want to be part of that glory rather than to return to dust for eternity we have the opportunity to read what the Bible says for ourselves and take the necessary steps while we still have life. There is no other way to attain to eternal life.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
