1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 8:1  There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

The simple link between these two verses is this: in order for your sins to be forgiven, you must be "in Christ" and you must actively seek forgiveness for your failings.

Your sins are not "automatically covered", that is, there is no such thing as "once saved always saved."  See

Once Saved, Always Saved?
