We must assume so because, before he was created, he was called Adam.  However, the word Adam in Hebrew is just as much a common noun referring to his species as it is a proper noun, that is to say, his name.  The word for "man" in Hebrew is "adam".  Adam is a man and his name in Hebrew translated into English is literally "Man."  

Genesis 2:7  And the LORD God formed man (of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
