Thanks for your question!

By Catholic I am assuming that you mean Roman Catholic. The NASB is a product of the Lockman Foundation and it has no links to the Catholic Church.

The following is taken from their website: http://www.lockman.org/tlf/tlfabout.php

The Lockman Foundation is a non-profit, interdenominational ministry dedicated to the translation, publication, and distribution of the New American Standard Bible, Amplified Bible, La Biblia de las Américas, Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy, and other Biblical resources....  We believe that the entire Bible is the inspired and inerrant word of God; the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

This statement itself demonstrates that the NASB translators have no connection with the Roman Catholic Church which believes that the teaching of the Church is as authoritative as scripture itself.

The following is taken from an authoritative Catholic website:http://www.scripturecatholic.com/

Catholics venerate the Scriptures as they venerate the Lord's body. But Catholics do not believe that God has given us His divine Revelation in Christ exclusively through Scripture. Catholics also believe that God's Revelation comes to us through the Apostolic Tradition and teaching authority of the Church.

Translators of the NASB

The translators were carefully chosen from the mainstream evangelical denominational groups and respected Christian institutions of higher learning. Some served on the translation committee itself. This was a committee located, for the most part, in the Southern California area. Others served as consultants who reviewed the translation committee's work and made recommendations for improvements. These consultants were chosen from all sections of the United States.

More than fifty who have earned doctorates in Biblical languages worked on the translation of the Scriptures. They actively teach in colleges and seminaries, including Wheaton College, Northwestern Seminary, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Dallas Theological Seminary, Fuller Theological Seminary, Talbot Theological Seminary, California State University, Bethany Nazarene College, Azusa-Pacific College, Bob Jones University, Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary, Covenant Theological Seminary, Grace Theological Seminary, Texas Christian University, Seattle Bible School, Southern California College, Westmont College, Point Loma College, and Regent College. The translators come from Presbyterian, Methodist, American Baptist, Disciples, Southern Baptist, Nazarene, General Association of Regular Baptist, Congregational, Independent Baptist, Free Methodist, and still other denominations. Some have international reputations. All support the philosophy of literal translation and the doctrinal statement of The Lockman Foundation, including the inerrancy of the Scriptures.

From the above we conclude that the NASB was not undertaken to be a Roman Catholic Bible nor was it sponsored in any way by the Catholic church.

I hope this helps,

Glenn Smith
