God wants us to live our lives by his commandments. Left to ourselves we do what we want to do. Our natural desires are a source of sin.

James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

For salvation, we must stop doing what we want to do and instead do what God wants us to do.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Jesus is our example

John 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

What God wants us to do is contained in the gospel preached by Jesus and his apostles.

The reward promised for those who obey the gospel is eternal life in the kingdom of God.

Jesus sacrificed his life to redeem those who will believe and obey the gospel.

John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

We must be ‘doers’ and not just ‘hearers’.

Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

I hope you find this helpful.
