According to the Bible our fate is sealed at the point of death.

Ezekiel 33:18 "When the righteous turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die because of it. 19 "But when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he shall live because of it. 20  "Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ O house of Israel, I will judge every one of you according to his own ways."

Here the ‘die’ refers to eternal death and ‘live’ refers to eternal life to be given at the resurrection. Everyone will be judged on the way they have lived.

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,

In death, we remain unconscious.

Ecclesiastes 9:5  For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward… 10  Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

Psalms 6:5  For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give You thanks?

Psalms 88:11 Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction?

Psalms 146:4  His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; In that very day his plans perish.

While we are alive, we have the opportunity to read the Bible and learn what God requires of us.

If we want to be raised to eternal life in the kingdom of God, we must understand and believe the gospel preached by Jesus Christ. Then we must repent of our sinful way of life (change the way we live), be baptised into Jesus Christ by immersion in water for the forgiveness of past sins, and live a new life by his commandments. If we fail to do this while we are alive, there is no point in praying for us when we are dead. We will have wasted our opportunity.

Hebrews 3:7  Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you will hear His voice, 8  Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, 9  Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. 10  Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’ 11  So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’" 12  Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13  but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14  For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end....
