John 10:10 NLT The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. 12 A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock. 13 The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, 15 just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.

In the Old Testament God had promised Israel a prophet like unto Moses:

Deuteronomy 18:18 NLT I will raise up a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell the people everything I command him. 19 I will personally deal with anyone who will not listen to the messages the prophet proclaims on my behalf.

There had been false prophets whom Jesus likens to thieves and robbers. The Jewish rulers of their day were no better.

Matthew 15:9 NLT Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.

Matthew 23:13 NLT “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either.

There would also arise false prophets amongst Christians.

Matthew 24:11 NLT And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people.

Acts 20:29 NLT I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock. 30 Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following.

Jesus shows that he is the good shepherd and the proof would be that he would give his life in sacrifice in order that his ‘sheep’ might have remission of sins and be raised to eternal life in the kingdom of God.

It is important that we believe and obey the gospel preached by Jesus and his apostles and hold fast to his commandments and not be led astray by teachers of false doctrine. The number of different churches bears testament that false teachings have entered Christianity.

Many false doctrines were adopted by the early church at the time that it was legalised by Constantine in AD 325. The trinity, immortal souls, heaven-going, hell as a place of eternal torment are all false doctrines . The church became the Mother of Harlots of Revelation 17.

Jesus is the one true shepherd we can trust and we must live by his commandments.

John 15:13 NLT There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command.

Luke 6:46 NLT “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”
