Why does god want his people to turn from their wicked ways?

Because God’s purpose is to fill the earth with his glory.

Numbers 14:21 but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD

God’s glory will be in the form of men and women raised to the divine nature in whom and with whom God will live forever.

2 Peter 1:4 ...by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

God made man with free will so that we can choose whether we want to be part of his purpose or not. Having free will means that we can disbey God. Disobeying God is called sin. The penalty for each and every sin is death.

Ezekiel 18:4 Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.

God is not willing that any should die.

Ezekiel 33:11 Say to them: ‘As I live,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Therefore God wants us repent and turn from our wicked ways so that he can give us eternal life. He provided a Son, Jesus, who lived a sinless life and gave it in sacrifice to make atonement for the sins of those who turn from their wicked ways.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures

Those who believe and obey the Gospel preached by Jesus and his apostles will receive forgiveness of sins and be raised from the dead to eternal life in the kingdom of God.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

The kingdom of God will be established when Jesus returns.

The choice is ours to make – carry on sinning and perish forever – or turn from our wicked ways and receive eternal life through the mercy of God.
