Can you explain Matthew 8:18-22? What is the application of these verses in our lives?

We must consider the consequences before we commit to following Jesus Christ. It is not a sudden decision to be made on the spur of the moment. Luke 14:28-33; Matthew 16:24

On the other hand, when we understand the Gospel, we are not to put off obeying it to sometime in the future. The inference is that the man’s father was not yet dead (Jewish burials happen within 24 hours of death). He was putting the decision off until the death of his father at an unknown date in the future.

The two men in the account are at opposite ends of the spectrum of those who hear the Gospel. The first needed to think through the commitment required. The second needed to stop thinking he could procrastinate before coming to a decision. The dead (who bury the dead) are those who refuse to believe and obey the Gospel. John 5:24; 1 John 5:12

I hope this helps.

God bless,
Glenn
