Are Mary and Joseph both from the house of David? If so, why is this significant?
Both Mary and Joseph are descendants of David.
Matthew 1:6-16 gives Joseph’s genealogy.
Luke 3:23-31 gives Mary’s genealogy.
From these genealogies we see that Joseph was descended from David through Solomon and Mary was descended from David through Nathan. Thus, the prophecy concerning Jechoniah (aka Coniah and Jehoiachin), the last but one king of Judah descended from Solomon is fulfilled. Jeremiah 22:30 Jesus' physical descent was through Nathan, not Solomon and Jechoniah.
