Isaiah 6:1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.

Uzziah was the king smitten with leprosy when he tried to offer incense as a priest. [2 Chronicles 26:16-21] John tells us that the vision that Isaiah sees represented Jesus Christ in Glory and the vision is associated with the unbelief of the Jews. [John 12:37]

Isaiah 6:2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

The word seraphim comes from the Hebrew ‘saraph’ to burn. Unlike the cherubim, the seraphim have 6 wings. Some take the view that cherubim and seraphim are classes of angels. They are not. They exist as symbols only and are not creatures in their own right.

The covering of the face could represent mourning (2 Samuel 19:4); the hiding of their glory (Exodus 34:33); blindness of the people (Isaiah 6:9); subservience to their Lord (Genesis 24:65). The covering of the feet could represent the inability of Israel to walk in the right way (Isaiah 59:7); the hiding of their glory (Isaiah 60:13); their feet (works) were clean (John 13:10).

That seraphim are associated with burning could represent judgment.

Isaiah 29:6 You will be punished by the LORD of hosts With... the flame of devouring fire.

Malachi 3:2 "But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire

And like launderer’s soap.

Deuteronomy 9:3 "Therefore understand today that the LORD your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the LORD has said to you.

Or the fiery trial of faith with which all must be tried.

Mark 9:49 "For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.

1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you;

Deuteronomy 4:24 "For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

1 Peter 1:7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,

Isaiah 6:3 And one cried to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!"

This refers to Christ reigning over all the earth

Isaiah 24:23 Then the moon will be disgraced And the sun ashamed; For the LORD of hosts will reign On Mount Zion and in Jerusalem And before His elders, gloriously.

Matthew 25:31 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory.

Isaiah 6:4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.

The house filled with smoke indicates the presence of God.

Exodus 40:34 Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

1 Kings 8:10 And it came to pass, when the priests came out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD,

Revelation 15:8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.

Isaiah 6:5 So I said: "Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts."

This is a common reaction of men of God who are all too aware of their own shortcomings.

Isaiah 6:6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth with it, and said: "Behold, this has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged.

The live coal taken from the altar almost certainly represents the word of God. Christ is represented by the altar; the word of God is the live coal.

John 15:3 "You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

Jeremiah 23:29 "Is not My word like a fire?" says the LORD, "And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Jeremiah 5:14 Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts: "Because you speak this word, Behold, I will make My words in your mouth fire, And this people wood, And it shall devour them.

Jeremiah 20:9 Then I said, "I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name." But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not.

Luke 24:32 And they said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?"

John 6:63 "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

Acts 2:3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

Understanding and obeying the word of God is able to make us clean through the sacrifice of Christ.

Isaiah 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: "Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me."

It is no coincidence that Jesus begins with Isaiah in his home town of Nazareth.

Luke 4:16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD." 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.

All who come to an understanding of Scripture will have the desire to preach Christ to others. Jesus finished halfway through Isaiah’s prophecy

Isaiah 61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,

In Isaiah’s day the day of vengeance was to come in the form of the Babylonians; in our day the day of vengeance will come with the return of Christ to save Israel from the northern invader and to judge this world in righteousness.

Isaiah 4:3 And it shall come to pass that he who is left in Zion and remains in Jerusalem will be called holy—everyone who is recorded among the living in Jerusalem. 4 When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and purged the blood of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning, 5 then the LORD will create above every dwelling place of Mount Zion, and above her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a covering. 6 And there will be a tabernacle for shade in the daytime from the heat, for a place of refuge, and for a shelter from storm and rain.
