Jacob's name means literally, "He who takes by the heel" or "supplanter", "cheater".  He was named this because, at birth, he had taken hold of his twin brother's heel in order to exit the womb. Later, of course, he supplanted his brother through a subterfuge and gained the right of the firstborn.
