Purgatory does not exist and is nowhere mentioned in the Bible. It was made up by the Catholic Church as a means of purifying the souls of the dead before they enter heaven. How any kind of spiritual cleansing could be acquired through fiery torture is beyond belief. It is a stupid, evil doctrine which turns God into a sadistic torturer. It has been a source of vast income for the Catholic church as its gullible members pay the church to have the souls of their loved ones released from purgatory and indeed provide a "down payment" to lessen their own time in this mini-hell.
