The Bible focuses primarily upon spiritual health rather than physical health.

We are subject to disease and death because Adam disobeyed God and brought sin and death upon his posterity.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

This life is therefore temporary. We are condemned by sin to death and can have no guarantee of longevity or quality of life.

God has provided through his son a way of redemption from sin and death.

By believing and obeying the gospel preached by Jesus Christ we can attain to spiritual health.

Spiritual health gives us no guarantee of physical health but it does give us the certain hope of resurrection from the dead to eternal life at a specific time in the future.

This will be at the time when Christ returns to establish the kingdom of God on earth.

Having said this there are certain practices legislated for in the Law of Moses which greatly reduce the onset and spread of disease.

Sanitation

Deuteronomy 23:13 And thou shalt have a paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou wilt ease thyself abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee:

Quarantine

Numbers 5:2  Command the children of Israel, that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is defiled by the dead: 3  Both male and female shall ye put out, without the camp shall ye put them; that they defile not their camps, in the midst whereof I dwell.

Discharge of bodily fluids

Leviticus 15:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying, 2  Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When any man hath a running issue out of his flesh, because of his issue he is unclean.

Sexually transmitted disease

Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Exodus 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

1 Corinthians 7:2... to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

Dietary precautions

Leviticus 11:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them, 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

Leviticus 7:23 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat.

Contact with dead bodies

Numbers 19:11 He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days.

Contamination of food, water and storage containers

Leviticus 11:32 And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean;

Although these Laws promote good health they are intended to give spiritual understanding of the principles of Godliness. We are expected to see the spiritual lessons in the practical arrangements.

Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Ill health and disability are not to be viewed as punishment for the sins of individuals.

John 9:2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents:

For those who obey the gospel, ill health and disability are trials of faith. The sufferings of Job are recorded for our example.

James 5:11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

Romans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

A healthy lifestyle is profitable in this life but a healthy spiritual lifestyle is of far greater benefit.

1 Timothy 4:8... bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

2 Corinthians 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

We look for the promised day when all the infirmities of this life will be done away.

Revelation 21:4... God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
