We have to be careful to read Paul's words in context. His advice on remaining single was in the context of persecution. He even says the advice is given because of the "present distress".

Since there is no overt persecution in our day, the advice does not apply in that sense. Paul goes on to say that marriage is honourable in all. Jesus said that those who forgo marriage to serve God are blessed but few can do it.  Marriage is approved of by God. The remarriage of a widow is also blessed. The only caveat to marriage by followers of Christ is that one must marry "only in the Lord".

1 Corinthians 7:39  A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband dies, she is at liberty to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.
