John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
The truth in context is that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah – the Christ – the son of God - and that his teaching was of God.The Jewish leaders refused to accept that he was any of these things. They refused to believe that he was the one could set them free from the servitude to sin and death and they would not accept his teachings.
John 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
The wages of servitude to sin is death. Salvation from death is only possible by belief that Jesus is the Christ; through whose sacrifice remission of sin is made possible. Belief must be accompanied by a corresponding change in lifestyle.
John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
Jesus is the only one through whom we can be saved.
John 14:6... I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The gospel preached by Jesus Christ is the truth.
Mark 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation...
Colossians 1:5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;
When we understand, repent of our old way of life and obey the gospel we obey the truth.
2 John 1:4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
Galatians 3:1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?
Galatians 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
Romans 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? 5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; 10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
It is important that we believe and obey the true gospel and doctrines recorded in the Bible. There are many different Churches and it is self evident that they cannot all be preaching the truth.
2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
The Christian Church had gone astray from the truth by the fourth century AD when it became the State Church of the Roman Empire.
In the following centuries the Church brought the name of Christ into disrepute by its corrupt doctrine and actions.
Despite the ‘Reformation’, many of the errors that had become part of the Church’s teaching were retained in the denominations which arose.
A good understanding of scripture, an open mind and the capacity for sound reasoning is necessary to determine the truth (the true gospel and doctrine) today.
I hope you have found this helpful.
God bless you,
