John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Revelation 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Jesus is not literally the ‘word’ of God.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The literal word of God was the word which God spoke

Psalms 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth... 9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

2 Peter 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water… 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

The word which God spoke was performed by his Spirit. The Spirit is the power of God, not a separate member of a godhead.

Job 33:4 The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

Psalms 104:30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.

God spoke and it was done

Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Psalms 148:5 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.

Some things that God spoke were (and are) to be fulfilled in the future.

These prophecies were given by God to the prophets.

Numbers 12:6 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.

When God spoke to them in this manner it is described as the ‘word of God’ coming to the prophet.

1 Kings 12:22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

1 Chronicles 17:3 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,

Luke 3:2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

The word of God was what Jesus lived by

Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

He makes clear that the word of God is that which proceeds out of the mouth of God.

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Jesus was figuratively the word of God made flesh in the following ways:

1. Jesus fulfilled the prophecies given by the word of God through the prophets

Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

There are some of the prophecies given by the word of God concerning the messiah.

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Deuteronomy 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Genesis 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

Genesis 49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

Isaiah 49:6 And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

John 1:45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

Luke 4:21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

Luke 24:25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

Acts 3:18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.

Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

Acts 13:27 For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. 28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. 29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre. 30 But God raised him from the dead:

By fulfilling the prophecies which God had spoken, Jesus was, in a figure, the word of God made (i.e. fulfilled in the) flesh.

2. Jesus lived his whole life in obedience to the word of God

Matthew 4:4... he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Hebrews 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

By his obedience to the word of God Jesus was, in a figure, the word of God made (i.e. obeyed in the) flesh.

3. Jesus fulfilled the Law given by God through Moses and having fulfilled it took it out of the way.

Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

John 8:46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

Acts 13:39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Acts 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

Because he fulfilled the Law of God given through Moses, Jesus was, in a figure, the word of God made (i.e. lived without fault in the) flesh

4. Jesus’ character was the manifestation of that of his Father

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

As a manifestation of God’s character Jesus was, in a figure, the word of God made (i.e. manifested in the) flesh.

5. Jesus delivered the words of God given to him by God

John 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

John 7:16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

John 8:40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

John 12:49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

John 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

Because Jesus spoke the words given to him by God, he was, in a figure, the ‘word made (i.e., spoken in the) flesh’.

In conclusion: The word that was with God and was God in the beginning was not Jesus. Jesus existed at that time only in the plan and purpose of God. It wasn’t until Jesus was born with our nature that he became the ‘word of God made flesh’. Jesus did not exist until he was born.

Jesus is not God. Jesus is the son of God begotten of the virgin Mary. He was mortal, which God can never be. He died for us, which God could not do.

I hope you find this helpful.

God bless,
