What is the meaning of 1 John 5:20? What does the phrase, "This is the true God" mean?

1 John 5:20,21 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

This is the true God refers to God, the Father of Jesus Christ. In a world filled with idolatry and the worship of man-made gods, coming to know the true God and understand what he requires of us is essential if we want to escape eternal death.

Paul writes to the Thessalonians: 1 Thessalonians 1:9 For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.

Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, preached the Gospel of the Kingdom of God for 3.1/2 years, at the end of which he gave his life in sacrifice so that the faithful of all ages might have forgiveness of sins. When Christ returns to establish the Kingdom of God upon the earth they will be raised from the dead to eternal life. If we desire eternal life it is essential that we come to know the true God through the teaching of his Son Jesus. John 17:8; John 17:3

Jesus now sits at God’s right hand as a mediator and intercessor for those who believe and obey the Gospel. 1Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25

I hope this helps.

God bless,
