In Matthew 6:9 Jesus taught his disciples to pray, hallowed be Thy Name. What Name?

Matthew 6:9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

  • Hallowed <37> ἁγιάζω hagiazo Translated in the KJV – ‘sanctify’ 26 times, ‘hallow’ 2 times, ‘be holy’ 1 time. Meaning - To make holy, consecrate, sanctify.
  • Name <3686> ὄνομα onoma Translated in the KJV – ‘name’ 193 times, ‘named’ 28 times, ‘called’ 4 times, ‘surname + <2007>’ 2 times, ‘named + 2564’ 1 time, not tr 1 time. Meaning: name: univ. of proper names the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i.e. for one’s rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds etc.

The name of God given in the Old Testament is represented by the consonants YHWH. How it should be pronounced is uncertain. God’s ‘name’ in the sense of his character is glorified when we live according to his commandments.
