To be blessed in scriptural terms means to be in receipt of a happy and successful outcome from God. It does not mean that God will give us longevity, health and prosperity in this life, but that ultimately we will attain to eternal life, rather than being condemned to eternal death.

The blessings are contained in the promises made to Abraham.

Genesis 12:2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and  in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

All nations are to be blessed in his offspring.

Genesis 22:18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

The blessings were repeated to Isaac.

Genesis 26:4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

And to Jacob.

Genesis 28:14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

The seed through whom the blessings are to come is Jesus Christ.

Peter.

Acts 3:25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

Paul.

Galatians 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

We can share in the blessings promised to Abraham by belief and baptism into Jesus Christ.

Galatians 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

For us who have not seen Christ we are blessed in believing.

John 20:29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

In baptism our previous sins are washed away. Christ is the propitiation for our sins. Our belief in Christ is accounted for righteousness.

Psalms 32:1 A Psalm of David... Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity...

Romans 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

If we would inherit the blessings after baptism we have to walk in a newness of life, by the commandments of God through Christ.

Luke 11:28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

The blessing comes through the characteristics to be developed in our lives.

  • Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
  • Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
  • Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they   shall be filled.
  • Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
  • Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
  • Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
  • Matthew 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Matthew 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Abraham was promised an eternal inheritance on the earth and this is the promise to all who are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Psalms 37:22 For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.

The ultimate blessing is eternal life in the kingdom of God upon earth.

Psalms 133:3 As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Christ will return from heaven to judge the earth and give eternal life to those that are his.

Matthew 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

We are blessed if while we await his return we ‘watch’ both in the way we live and in the give our attention to Bible prophecies being fulfilled.

Revelation 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

Revelation 19:9 And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Revelation 22:7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.

Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
